Enhancing Driver Safety: The Importance of Attentiveness, Knowledge, Prevention, and Control
What is the Arch of Driver Safety?
Driver safety involves the ability to operate a vehicle responsibly and safely. It includes several key skills, including attentiveness, knowledge of laws, and the ability to anticipate road hazards.
The Circle of Safety is a procedure any driver can follow to ensure the area around their vehicle is safe before departing. It requires checking the clearances to the side, front, and rear of the vehicle.
Attentiveness
The ability to focus one’s mind and eyes on the road is an important characteristic of safe driving. Attentiveness includes a driver’s ability to maintain awareness of other cars on the road, to identify potential hazards and to scan the road for changes in conditions that may require action.
There are many ways in which drivers can be distracted while on the road. These include cellular communication devices, the operation of non-essential vehicle systems, and other activities that take the driver’s attention away from the roadway. These distractions contribute to a significant number of car accidents, especially among adolescents.
This study aims at analyzing how different warning and intervention modalities are perceived during attentive and distracted test drives. It also compares three system variants in terms of their user acceptance: a conventional non-adaptive system, an adaptive system and a high-end adaptive system. The results show that the adaptation of a safety system according to the driver’s attention level does not interfere with user acceptance, even under distracting conditions.
Knowledge of Traffic Laws
The public highway is a common space that requires solidarity and responsibility among its users. In order to avoid traffic accidents, it is important that all road users have a proper knowledge of the existing laws and that they are aware of them. This should be achieved through road formation or training (at the driving school), mass media, and, of course, in the form of road safety education.
Several studies have analyzed drivers’ awareness of the rules. Most of them affirm that they know quite well the current legislation on traffic normative, while also considering that these regulations are effective. However, these facts should be contrasted with the percentage of respondents that actually commit violations and fines.
The most common mistake that many drivers make is not obeying road safety regulations. This includes things like not wearing seat belts and speed limits. This can lead to serious consequences for the driver, including losing their license or even being arrested.
The Ability to Prevent Accidents
Having a strong ability to prevent accidents is essential for safe driving. This involves recognizing potential hazards, maintaining situational awareness and minimizing distractions. It also means having the ability to control one’s emotions and avoid unsafe acts that can lead to a traffic accident, such as cutting off another vehicle or driving aggressively.
The ability to prevent accidents also includes regularly testing safety equipment to ensure it works properly. It also involves creating emergency action plans that are easy to understand and implement, which can help in a crisis. Accidents decrease productivity and efficiency, so they should be avoided whenever possible. They also entail costs such as lost productivity, sick pay and repairs to equipment.
At Arch, we employ a proactive, behavior-based safety program that involves every field employee as a safety observer, with the goal of zero injuries at each operation each and every day. Our employees are encouraged to take the initiative and report any at-risk behaviors or conditions they encounter while on the job.
Maintaining Control
It’s crucial for drivers to know how to maintain control in order to avoid accidents. Recognizing a hazard, deciding how to react and physically carrying out those reactions all take time. This is why the earlier a driver can spot a potential safety hazard, the better.
For example, when preparing to drive, it’s important that the driver walks all around their vehicle to check for clearances in front, side, back and above. This is called the Circle of Safety procedure, and it’s an excellent way for any driver to ensure that they can safely operate their vehicle before departing. Using this procedure can reduce the risk of damage to vehicles and pedestrians, as well as minimize injuries. This is especially important when driving around work areas, such as construction sites or warehouses.
